Hazardous waste
Collection and disposal of small quantities of hazardous waste.
Asbestos waste collection and disposal service.
Collection and disposal of small quanitities of hazardous waste
Over five million tonnes of hazardous waste is produced in England and Wales each year. Ethos Recycling provide a solution for all hazardous waste requirements. If you produce, move, receive or dispose of such waste, we offer a straightforward and simple solution to ensure all legal requirements are fulfilled under the Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005 and the waste is disposed of safely and economically.
Development in legislation has meant that it is no longer possible to dispose of hazardous waste with non-hazardous waste. This means that the number of sites that can accept hazardous commercial waste has reduced drastically.
Ethos Recycling offers a service to suit your every need as it may be difficult to establish what can be disposed of via a skip and what is classed as special waste. Special waste streams include:
- Paint tins
- Mastic tubes
- Aerosols
- Solvents
- Oils
- Spillage cleanup
- Contaminated water
- Fluorescent tubes
- IT/Office equipment
- Fridge/Freezers
- Pesticides
- Pharmaceutical waste

Our key services include:
- Waste audits to help characterise the waste
- Advice on the most cost-effective way to comply with the Law
- Constantly provide a high level of technical support
- Ensure that all wastes are labelled and packed for safe transportation
- Guidance through the compliance process and assist in the safe treatment and disposal of waste
- Nationwide service to ensure all of your sites receive the same level of service and a single point-of-contact for all Hazardous Waste requirements

Waste Description
Asbestos waste is ‘Hazardous Waste’ when it contains more than 0.1% asbestos.
The Hazardous Waste Regulations apply.
Asbestos Waste Types
Asbestos fibres may be found either firmly or loosely bound in a number of products:
1. Bonded: Firmly-bound asbestos (‘non-friable’ asbestos) – EWC code (170605)
Fibre-cement products formerly contained asbestos fibres, firmly embedded in a hardened cement matrix. Asbestos-cement products that may be found around the home include:
Flat or corrugated sheeting (commonly called ‘fibro’ or ‘AC sheeting’).
Water or flue pipes.
Roof shingles.
Flexible building boards.
Imitation brick cladding.
Other materials that may contain firmly bound asbestos fibres include:
Plaster patching compounds.
Textured paint.
Vinyl floor tiles.
The backing of linoleum floor coverings.
2. Fibrous: Loosely-bound asbestos (‘friable’ asbestos) – EWC code (170601)
The loose form of asbestos fibres may be found in a few older forms of insulation used in domestic heaters and stoves, and in ceiling insulation products.
It should be noted, however, that ceiling insulation containing asbestos was generally used in commercial buildings and it is unlikely that the ceiling insulation in a domestic building will contain asbestos.
Transport
All asbestos waste is subject to Schedule 2 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006 and most waste is subject to the Carriage of Dangerous Goods (etc) Regulations 2004 (CDG).
Firmly-bound asbestos - asbestos cement and articles with asbestos reinforcement - does not release hazardous or respirable fibres easily. CDG does not apply.
The Carriage of Dangerous Goods (etc) Regulations 2004 (CDG) applies for all other asbestos waste.
Packaging and labelling
Waste must be packed in UN-approved packaging approximately 0.2 mm thick (for example heavy duty builders plastic) with a CDG hazard sign and asbestos code information visible.
Double-wrap and label ‘asbestos waste’. Standard practice is to use a red inner bag with asbestos warnings, and a clear outer bag with the CDG sign.
Caution: Don’t overfill bags. Beware sharp objects that could puncture plastic.
